Citizen science projects are expanding globally, with the African continent, particularly Nigeria, registering significant growth. Here, we document and analyse novel operations of the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project (NIBAP), 2015–2022. This project has employed the use of ornithologists, mainly trained at the A. P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) located in Jos, Nigeria, and its 28 bird clubs established across Nigeria to enlist 827 bird enthusiasts that contribute regular and near real-time data about bird distribution and relative abundance in the country. Interestingly, NiBAP has recorded about 75% of the bird species known from Nigeria in only about 50% of Nigeria's total surface area, including 39 nationally threatened species. The Common Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus, Laughing Dove Spilopelia senegalensis, and Grey-backed Camaroptera Camaroptera brevicaudata were the most commonly recorded species, while Amurum Forest Reserve, Rennajj Fish Farm, and Obudu Cattle R...

Lerm, R.E., Ehlers Smith, D.A., Thompson, D.I. and Downs, C.T., 2023 Human infrastructure, surface water and tree cover are important drivers of bird diversity across a savanna-protected area‑mosaic landscape. (REPORT - SABAP2) , Landscape Ecology
Protected areas are important in mitigating threats to biodiversity, including land conversion. Some of the largest protected areas are located in biodiverse savanna systems where a mosaic of landuses exist beyond their borders. The protected areas located in such systems are often host to threatened species and diverse animal communities. In spite of the ecosystem services birds provide, we do not know how functionally and evolutionary diverse the community is in north-eastern South Africa, or what the drivers of such diversity are inside and outside one ofthe world’s largest savanna protected areas: Kruger National Park (KNP)....

2019 SABAP2/BirdMap Protocol (RESOURCE GUIDE - BIRDMAP)
Southern African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP): The Protocol Explained. The atlas protocol is a survey protocol, designed to record the presence of as many bird species as possible within a defined area. The project allows for two types of surveys (cards) to be submitted – Full Protocol and Ad-hoc Protocol. Full Protocol card: The atlaser fully complied with the protocol rules (set out below). Ad-hoc: The atlaser did not comply with all of the atlas rules. Atlasers should always aim to submit Full Protocol cards, as they have far more value for tracking changes in bird communities than Ad-hoc Protocol cards. Atlasers can also submit incidental records of noteworthy sightings ...
